I've written before about the Cory Maye situation in Mississippi. Radley Balko's been following it. Turns out that Bob Evans is Cory's attorney. Bob Evans is also the public defender by contract for two Mississippi counties. So the Board of Alders tells Bob that if he takes the Cory Maye case, he'll lose the public defender contract. He takes the case and lo and behold, he loses the contract. And I thought I had some unpopular clients.
Wow. That contract system sounds like a great way to protect the rights of indigent defendants.
Not.
I can't believe crap like this still goes on nearly 45 years after Gideon.
