I posted a few days ago about going to NCDC. I wanted to update a bit now that I'm at the halfway mark. First, this weekend, my buddy from Juneau and I took off and went to Savannah, Georgia. It was nice to get away and chill for a bit. We did some touristy things, tours and such, but mainly, we just chilled - drinking beer and eating great seafood. We ate last night at the Crab Shack, a place I would highly recommend to anybody in the Savannah area. Just having the opportunity to relax after an intense week was really restful.
It also gave me the energy to get ready for the next week. As I said in my previous post, this is not your typical "sit in a seat and listen to a boring lecturer" CLE. There are assignments and the participants are expected to be prepared. In many ways, it reminds me of law school. So, my roomie and I used the trip back to go over the evidence/impeachment problems we will be working on in class this week.
When we got back to Macon, I saw most of my group downstairs working on the problems for this coming week. So, I dropped off my stuff and joined them - don't want to get behind. Competition, you know.
Competition aside, I am watching our group really meld together. When we started, the well-defined protective barriers and reserves were readily apparent. As time has gone on, though, various exercises have lowered those barriers, erased those reserves. It has enabled us to put ourselves and our egos (hard to tell which is larger, sometimes) and to work on learning. Spending time in Savannah and interacting with other people, tour guides, bar maids, tourists, locals, has made me realize some of the subtle and not so subtle differences this conference has created. I want to get back but I also want some time after this so I can absorb what it is that I have learned and who I have become.
